Vancity Chooses Temenos SaaS for Phased Core Banking Upgrade
3 min read

Vancity has selected Temenos SaaS to modernize its core banking platform, using a phased transition designed to maintain business continuity while introducing new digital capabilities.

Canada’s largest credit union serves more than 588,000 members across over three million accounts, with reported assets of CAD 42.4 billion. At that scale, modernization is as much about keeping everyday banking running as introducing something new.

Build First, Migrate Progressively

According to the official Temenos announcement, Vancity will follow a build-and-migrate strategy rather than move its operations in a single transition.

The programme covers retail deposits, retail lending, corporate banking and payments. Its technology scope includes:

  • Temenos Core for core banking operations.

  • Temenos Payments Hub for payment processing.

  • Temenos Data Hub for banking data capabilities.

The approach is intended to let Vancity introduce digital services while progressively moving existing operations. Members still need their accounts to work while the technology changes behind them—the migration plan cannot simply ask everyone to come back Monday.

Microsoft Azure Provides the Cloud Foundation

Temenos SaaS will run on Microsoft Azure, providing what the companies describe as a scalable, resilient foundation with simpler core technology management.

Vancity also expects a more efficient technology environment to support its ESG commitments. The announcement does not specify quantified efficiency gains or a migration completion date.

Chief Technology Officer Wendy Murphy framed the move around reducing complexity so the credit union can respond faster to changing member needs.

Why Core Technology Matters in Business Acquisitions

Vancity’s programme is a technology modernization project, not an announced business sale. Still, it highlights a relevant question for buyers assessing banking and fintech businesses listed on N5Deal: what technology transition comes with the business?

Beyond licence scope and customer numbers, an acquisition review needs to consider core systems, data migration requirements and service continuity. An operating business and an easily integrated business are not necessarily the same thing.
